Where It Should Be Placed
For an accurate reading of your home’s temperature levels, it’s recommended that you position the thermostat in a spot away from areas that have fluctuating temperatures. Ideally, it should be placed in the central-most room of your home, such as on an interior wall somewhere in the living room or family room. That way, the thermostat will read centrally circulated air, giving you the most accurate average home temperature.
Where It Shouldn’t Be Placed
Near air vents, doors or windows – The thermostat should accurately represent the current heating and air conditioning levels in your home. Placing it above or near an air vent isn’t recommended, because it will be the first thing to get hit by incoming heated or conditioned air. Placing them near doors or windows isn’t ideal either, since they’re constantly opened and closed.
Near the kitchen – With so many appliances in a concentrated area, your kitchen is probably one of the warmest places in your home. Placing a thermostat in the kitchen will make it register a warmer temperature than actually exists, which causes the air conditioner to turn on even when it isn’t needed.
In direct sunlight – Placing your thermostat in an area that gets direct sunlight will be sure to give you false readings. If it’s placed near a skylight, for example, the thermostat will read the area with the warmer temperature, even if the rest of your house is at different temperature levels.
