HVAC maintenance during the fall is essential to ensuring you have a reliable heating system for the rest of the year. In today’s post, local electrician and HVAC company Broom Heating & Air Conditioning shares HVAC maintenance tips for the fall season.
Clean the vents — Dust and small pieces of debris can get into your HVAC system, so before you turn it back on for the season, make it a point to clean the air vents. In addition to preventing dust and other particulates from recirculating in your home, this also helps keep contaminants out of your HVAC coils and blower motors.
Replace the air filter— Air filters are ideally replaced every three months, so if you haven’t done this recently, you should do so now. Air filters are more efficient when they’re not clogged with built-up dust, fibers and other particulates. Replacing the filter also helps reduce the strain on your HVAC system. When buying replacement air filters, make sure you choose the exact same size to avoid leaks.
Test your thermostat — Make sure your thermostat is working properly and displaying accurate readings. If it’s not, follow the troubleshooting steps as prescribed in the user guide. Testing your thermostat early in the season will make things far less uncomfortable in the event that you have to call your HVAC installation and repair contractor for repairs.
Clean the outdoor unit — Leaves, debris, and small animals may make their way into your HVAC system’s outdoor unit, blocking airflow that can place unnecessary strain on the outdoor unit. Some models are designed to be easily cleaned by the user, but if yours isn’t, ask your HVAC contractor to do it for you. Keeping the outdoor unit clean can help prevent unexpected breakdowns.
Check the condensate and refrigerant lines — The condensate lines take away excess moisture from the HVAC system and move it into the condensate pans, and shouldn’t have any signs of clogging. Refrigerant lines help circulate refrigerant through your HVAC system, and leaking refrigerant lines can result in reduced HVAC efficiency. Signs of clogged condensate lines and leaking refrigerant should be fixed by an HVAC technician as soon as possible.
