What Happens When You Install an Oversized Air Conditioner?

It’s a common belief that the larger the air conditioner, the better it can cool your house. There are several factors to consider when choosing the size of your new air conditioning unit. When you choose an AC that is too large for your home, you could experience several different issues.

Read on to find out what happens when your air conditioner is oversized or overpowered.

Your energy bills will increase. Many homeowners run their air conditioners all-day-long during warmer weather. If you have an oversized AC, your energy bills will increase significantly. This is because a unit that’s too big will have to work harder to reach the preferred temperature.

Your AC will cycle too frequently. Every cycle will last from seven to 10 minutes if your air conditioner is running efficiently. During short cycles, your unit will work too hard, increasing the risk of overheating. An oversized AC is more likely to short cycle after the first burst of cold air enters the house. If your AC short cycles after installation, get an inspection from an HVAC repair expert. They’ll take measurements to determine the ideal unit size.

Your air conditioner will fail early. A properly-sized, -installed and -maintained AC will serve you longer. If your air conditioner isn’t the right size for your home, it won’t last long. An oversized unit can suffer from early deterioration due to short cycling, resulting in costly repairs and a shorter AC lifespan.
