Don’t forget that spring is also allergy season. To prevent allergy flare-ups and maintain good indoor air quality, you need to make sure your HVAC system is ready for the season’s demands. In addition to changing the filter—which should be done every three months, and every two months if you have pets—what are the best ways to get your HVAC system ready for spring?
Test your cooling or air conditioning unit. Turn on your AC to see if cool air is being evenly distributed throughout your home. If there are still hot or cold spots after adjusting the thermostat, you should have an HVAC repair contractor inspect your HVAC unit.
Clean the air ducts. One of the usual suspects behind uneven cooling is dirty air ducts. Debris lodged in air ducts can disrupt airflow; not to mention, dust in the air ducts can lower indoor air quality.
Important note: If you still experience uneven cooling after cleaning the air ducts, it’s recommended that you have a technician inspect them for cracks or holes that could be allowing cool air to leak out.
Review previous electric bills. It’s natural for electricity consumption to spike in the winter and summer. However, if there’s a consistent spike in your electric bill, you might need to upgrade your air conditioning or heating unit. Over time, your system will lose efficiency due to natural wear and tear.
Here’s a pro tip: A programmable thermostat is worth the investment, especially if you want greater control over indoor temperatures or lower heating and cooling costs. Programmable thermostats can be set to automatically raise or lower the temperature when you leave the house and adjust it back to the usual setting when you return home.
Schedule an HVAC inspection. Remember: routine maintenance is a must if you want to keep your HVAC system in good condition. As a rule, you should have a technician inspect your HVAC system at least twice a year, ideally in the spring and fall.
